Lady Eagle Golfers Fifth After Day One at Regionals

Mt. San Jacinto College shot 332 to land in 5th place after the first day of the CCCAA Southern California Regional, hosted by the Foothill Conference, and several Lady Eagles soared to meet the challenge. MSJC is ahead of Saddleback College (372), but trails Palomar College (306), Glendale College (309), Irvine Valley College (317), and College Of The Canyons (321). Reflecting the higher level of play this year in the Southern California portion of the CCCAA, last year the Lady Eagles posted a 337 and were in 4th place after the first day of the Regional.

Sophomore Co-Captain and International Student Ya-Ting (Tina) Yang is in the hunt for the CCCAA Southern California Regional Individual Championship carding a 3 over par 75 and is tied for 3rd place after the first round over the 5,423 yard Twin Oaks Golf Course. Pattraporn Silwanna of Glendale College is the leader at the halfway point with a 70.

Sophomore Co-Captain Melissa Simpson bogeyed the last hole as she made an unsuccessful charge for birdie and finished with an 81 (37-44). Simpson’s round included 4 birdies on the front nine and 1 birdie on the back side and puts her in a tie for 16th place in the 51 women field. Simpson has a legitimate chance to qualify for the CCCAA State Tournament next week in Hanford, as the top 12 individuals advance from the Regional and the 12th spot is currently occupied by a score of 79. Again reflecting the higher level of play this year in the Southern California portion of the CCCAA, last year a score of 163 qualified for the CCCAA State Tournament.

Freshman Vivian Shoemaker (San Jacinto HS) posted a collegiate personal best 82 (40-42) in a round that started out with partly cloudy skies and no breeze with the temperature in the high 50’s and evolved into increasing cold breezes from the northwest as the day wore on and the sun had more of a presence to maintain the temperature. Shoemaker’s round included 1 birdie, 8 pars, 7 bogeys, and 2 double bogeys and she is tied for 19th.

Freshman Valerie Zulueta (Paloma Valley HS) and Alexis Moss (Beaver HS - Utah) both posted a 94 to round out the scoring for the Lady Eagles. Zulueta and Moss are tied for 43rd place.
The second and concluding round of the Regional resumes at 8:00 a.m., on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 with a shotgun start.
