MSJC Women Third in Golf Conference Opener
Mt. San Jacinto College let a golden opportunity slip away in the defense of their Foothill Conference Championship as they finished in third place at Foothill Conference #1 hosted by College Of The Desert, at Woodhaven Country Club, in Palm Desert, on Monday, September 12, 2011. The Lady Eagles (1-2) took a step backwards from the Cactus Classic this past weekend as they shot a 351, behind Palomar College (3-0), 326, and Mt. San Antonio College (2-1), 347, but ahead of College Of The Desert (0-3), 368.
However, Sophomore Co-Captain and International Student, Ya-Ting (Tina) Yang, sizzled in the 101 degree dry heat of the desert as the medalist posting an even par, 70 (37-33), in her quest to repeat as the Foothill Conference Most Valuable Player. Yang's round consisted of 5 birdies, 9 pars, 3 bogeys, and a double bogey and was 4 strokes better then her nearest competitor.
Freshman Valerie Zulueta (Paloma Valley HS) returned to her sub-90 rounds with an 89 over the 5,794 yard track placing her tied for 8th place in the 24 women field.
Sophomore and Co-Captain Melissa Simpson and Freshman Vivian Shoemaker (San Jacinto HS) each carded a 96 putting them tied for 15th place. Simpson's round (48-48) included 4 pars, 6 bogeys, 4 double bogeys, and 4 triple bogeys. Shoemaker's round (50-46) consisted of 1 birdie, 1 par, 8 bogeys, 7 double bogeys, and 1 triple bogey.
Freshman Alexis Moss (Beaver HS - Utah) shot a 98 and finished in 16th place. Freshman Dominique Lombardi (Beaumont HS) posted a 121 for 22nd place, which consisted of 1 par and 5 bogeys.
MSJC will get another crack at "The Woody" on Wednesday, September 14, 2011, with the Lady Eagles teeing off at 10:00 a.m. in a modified shotgun start, in Foothill Conference #2.
