New Fires 75 for Lady Eagles Golf Team
Kathryn New picked up on Saturday where she left off on Friday and did three better shooting a 75 for a two day total of 153 finishing tied for 8th out of the field of 68 California Community College golfers in the COD Frank Garcia Desert Invitational. New had 15 pars and 3 bogeys as she burned the edges and left the ball hanging on the lip on numerous birdie opportunities throughout the day. The Indian Canyons Golf Resort South Course in Palm Springs provided a challenge for teams coming from throughout Northern, Central, and Southern California including last year's Foothill Conference Champion, Palomar College, last year's State Champion, Santa Barbara College, and this year's COD Frank Garcia Desert Invitational Champion, Sacramento College.
MJSC Freshman Katelyn Hardy mirrored her opening nine hole score from the day before with another 41 and did three strokes better than Friday after making the turn for a second round 86 and a two day total of 176 in her first intercollegiate golf competition. Hardy's mental toughness was demonstrated in the triple digit temperatures as she saved par from a green side sand trap after suffering double bogey on the previous hole on numerous occasions, to go along with the only birdie recorded by a Lady Eagle golfer on the second and final day of the COD Frank Garcia Desert Invitational.
The Lady Eagles return to the Coachella Valley on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, for the opening of Foothill Conference play hosted by College Of The Desert. The golfers will tee off at 11:00 a.m. at Woodhaven Country Club in Palm Desert.
