New Shoots 81 in First Round at State

Lady Eagle Sophomore Kathryn New is five strokes off the lead and in the hunt for the Women’s Golf State Championship of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) as she posted an opening round 81 on the par 73, 5,976 yard Kings Country Club course in Hanford, California. New fired a two over par 38 on the front nine with 3 birdies, 2 pars, 3 bogeys, and 1 double bogey and a five over par 43 on the back nine with 1 birdie, 2 pars, 5 bogeys, and 1 double bogey.

Although New was unhappy with her play off of the tee, she is playing with confidence in her iron play and appears to be on the verge of the floodgates opening in her short game as her 4 birdies and 1 chip-in on the fast, but true greens in one round are season highs. Additionally, the sunny weather and relatively warm temperatures that are expected to continue cause New to feel right at home on the Kings Country Club track.

New’s 81 ties her for 8th place in the 34 women Championship field behind 1st round leader Ellen Krausse of Bakersfield College who shot a 76. The average score for the 1st round of play was 83.8. New will be teeing off on Hole #10 at 8:10 a.m. on the second and concluding day of the State Championship on Tuesday, November 17, 2009.
