The 2011 Lady Eagles Golf Team flew as far as their wings would take them as their season ended as the 5th best team in the State, while one Lady Eagle continues to soar on to the CCCAA State Tournament for the second consecutive year. Mt. San Jacinto College posted a 669 (332-337) to finish ahead of Saddleback College (743; 372-361), but behind Glendale College (606; 309-297), Palomar College (609; 306-303), Irvine Valley College (639; 317-322), and College Of The Canyons (645; 321-324), in the CCCAA Southern California Regional hosted by the Foothill Conference. The higher level of skilled play this year in the Southern California portion of the CCCAA was again demonstrated as MSJC placed third in the Regional last year with a 671 and were the 4th best team in the State
Sophomore Co-Captain and International Student Ya-Ting (Tina) Yang will be joining Glendale College and Palomar College at the CCCAA State Tournament next week as she looks to improve upon her 3rd place finish last year. Yang climbed up the leader board on the second day of the Regional and again finished 2nd, but this time in a tie posting a 150 (75-75) score. Although Yang improved upon her 151 (71-80) score from last year it was not good enough to get by Pattraporn Silwanna of Glendale College who fired a 2 under par 142 (70-72), over the 5,423 yard Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos.
Sophomore Co-Captain Melissa Simpson closed out her MSJC collegiate career at a high level posting a 162 (81-81) that would have qualified her for the State Tournament last year, but this year with the higher level of skilled play her score landed her in 20th place. Simpson is currently weighing several opportunities that await her at quality NCAA Division III schools in California to continue her collegiate golf career and earn her 4 year degree in a business related field.
Freshman Vivian Shoemaker (San Jacinto HS) fell back slightly from her collegiate career best score on Monday as she finished with a 173 (82-91), on a sunny day with very little wind day that started out with temperatures in the low 50’s when the shotgun start commenced and ended with a temperature in the low 70’s. Shoemaker placed 35th in the 51 women field and is excited about next year and continuing to lower her scores and be more consistent as she experienced significant improvement in all aspects of her game this past season, which she expects to build upon.
Freshman Alexis Moss (Beaver HS - Utah) carded a 184 (94-90) to move up the leader board and finished in 42nd place. Moss, who has played golf for only 3 years and is from Utah, is looking forward to having the first opportunity in her life to work on her golf game year-round playing in Southern California and significantly improving her scoring for next year as a Lady Eagle sophomore.
Freshman Valerie Zulueta (Paloma Valley HS) shot 190 (94-96) to finish in 44th place in the 51 women field.. Zulueta, the only MSJC freshman to earn Foothill All-Conference recognition, is looking forward to working on her game in the off-season and next year increasing her consistency and the number of rounds she posts in the 70’s.
Freshman Dominique Lombardi (Beaumont HS), who was unable to play in the Regional due to personal circumstances, along with red-shirt Freshmen Madeline Figueroa (Beaumont HS) and Bianca Sandoval (Beaumont HS) are embracing the opportunity to work on their games through next Fall when they seek to be significant contributors to Mt. San Jacinto College Lady Eagles success, which will be entering its 4th season as a Program and 3rd season as a team.
The Lady Eagles, who have had a presence in every State Tournament since the Program started in 2009, will be making their 3rd straight presence in the State Tournament next Monday-Tuesday, November 14-15, 2011, in Hanford.
