The Lady Eagles (14-10) began the final week of the regular season in Foothill Conference #9, on Monday, October 24, 2011, at the Comet Classic hosted by Palomar College at Twin Oaks Golf Course, in San Marcos, which is the site of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional at the beginning of November. Although this Tournament brought in most of the teams from Southern California, it was significant to Mt. San Jacinto College only for individual play as team play was not part of the format.
Sophomore Co-Captain and International Student Ya-Ting (Tina) Yang made the most of the opportunity finishing tied for first place in the field of 50 women with an even par 72 over the 5,423 yard track. Although Yang had trouble mastering the greens, her season Conference average is 71.6 strokes and she has positioned herself well to repeat as Foothill Conference Most Valuable Player and possibly set the Conference record for season low stroke average heading into the Foothill Conference Finals.
Freshman Valerie Zulueta (Paloma Valley HS) appears to have begun to work through the challenges in the game of golf that she has experienced over the past few weeks since she last shot 79 and posted an 80 to finish tied for 16th in the Tournament. Zulueta’s round lowered her season Conference average to 86.3 strokes and puts her in 13th place, which is the last spot on the Foothill All-Conference Team.
Sophomore Co-Captain Melissa Simpson carded an 85 (43-42) on the golf course that she and her teammates saw for the first time. Simpson’s round included 1 birdie, 5 pars, 10 bogeys, and 2 double bogeys. Additionally, her round placed her in a tie for 25th place in the Tournament and lowered her season conference average to 85.5 strokes placing her in 9th place in Conference scoring.
Freshman Vivian Shoemaker (San Jacinto HS) shot an 87 (43-44) in the overcast conditions that started out with a few sprinkles and a temperature in the 60’s, but burned off into partly sunny skies and a temperature in the high 70’s with slight breezes that increased as the day went on. Shoemaker’s round consisted of 9 pars, 5 bogeys, 3 double bogeys, and a quadruple bogey. Her finish placed her tied for 27th in the Tournament and lowered her season conference scoring average to 88.8 strokes, which is 16th in Conference scoring.
Alexis Moss (Utah - Beaver HS) carded a 96 to finish in a tie for 39th place in the Tournament. Her round increased her season conference scoring average to 94.7, but lowered her position in the conference individual standings to 19th place.
