Credit English as a Second Language Program

The Vision of the

Mt. San Jacinto College Credit ESL Program

The purpose of the MSJC credit English as a Second Language Program is to serve, equip, and empower students who grew up speaking a language other than English or in addition to English to prepare for educational, vocational, and personal success through specialized instruction, supportive classroom environments, and access to effective resources. ESL students are prepared to:

  • Complete credit and non-credit certificates that lead to gainful employment
  • Obtain associate degrees and transfer opportunities by completing transfer level English and college level content courses
  • Achieve personal goals

Program Description

The credit, non-transfer English as a Second Language program consists of academically focused courses for students who speak a language other than English at home or whose first language is not English. English and critical thinking skills are taught to prepare students to successfully take transfer level English and 100 level content courses for certificates, degrees, and transfer. Writing, reading, speaking, and listening are core components of this credit program. Students’ educational, vocational, and personal goals are supported and developed. Dedicated ESL tutors are available in the learning resource centers. The writing sequence of ESL-051W, ESL-062W and ESL-098W provides a direct pathway to transfer level English and equips students with vital writing skills for success. The Combined English Skills Assessment Test (CELSA) is used for placement into the credit ESL program.
