WHAT IS FLEX?
According to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, “The Flex program consists of staff development activities “in lieu of” regular instruction. Flex activities (Title 5, Section 55724, Item A-4) can be, and are not limited to, training programs, group retreats, field experiences, and workshops in activities such as course and program development and revision, staff development activities, development of new instructional materials, and other instruction-related activities.”
WHAT IS MY FLEX OBLIGATION?
According to our contract, the full-time faculty have a FLEX obligation of 24 hours (4 days x 6 hours per day, maximum) for the 2013-2014 academic year.
HOW DO I FULFILL MY FLEX OBLIGATION?
The 24-hour requirement is fulfilled by tracking the number of hours spent
- at MSJC pre-college mandatory meeting (1 day (August)/6 hours)
- at MSJC presentations which have prior approval by the Flex-committee
- conducting individual projects that have pre-approval of the committee (Pre-approval is not required, but do not assume you will receive credit. It is always best to get prior approval).
HOW DO I GET PRIOR APPROVAL FOR INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS?
All individual projects must be detailed on a FLEX CONTRACT ADDENDUM. Submit the form, checking the proposal box. The Flex committee reviews and approves proposals every month and will return your proposals to you directly after their next meeting. Please be sure to resubmit the approved addendum with your MASTER CONTRACT, once completed, but no later than March 14, 2014.
HOW DOES THE FLEX COMMITTEE DETERMINE ‘WHAT IS FLEX?’
The Flex committee is a faculty-driven group that determines whether an activity is Flex-able. No other individual or group has that right or responsibility. The Flex committee discusses project proposals and votes on them, in accordance with the “Flex Guidelines for Professional Development” which have been developed following participatory governance procedures. This document is revisited regularly. Faculty input on these guidelines and the Flex process is encouraged for the health of this program.
HOW DO I KEEP TRACK OF MY FLEX ACTIVITIES?
Although we anticipate going to an automated “flex-track” system very soon, this year you must submit a hard-copy of the MASTER CONTRACT. The Master Contract is submitted only once—when you have completed your Flex obligation, but no later than March 14th. If you wish to turn it in earlier (as we have done in previous years) to get prior approval and feedback—you must do that by January 1st. Otherwise, simply complete it and turn it in, with your signature once you are done—NO LATER THAN March 14, 2014. WHEN IS THE CONTRACT DUE?
You are encouraged to submit your completed contracts as early as possible, once they are complete. All contracts must be in and complete by March 14, 2014. Failure to certify that your Flex obligation has been completed will result in a reduction in your June paycheck.
WHY WOULD MY PAYCHECK BE REDUCED?
Your paycheck would be reduced, because full-time faculty have already been “paid” for the 24 hours that are reserved for Flex activities “in lieu of” instruction. But that won’t happen to you, right?
