Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Update

State and local health officials and the news media are alerting the public to the resurgence of Whooping Cough, or Pertussis. In Mt. San Jacinto College’s continued effort to provide a safe and healthy learning environment, college officials are urging students and employees to learn more about the disease and take steps to prevent the spread of the bacteria.

A good source of information is located on the county’s web site:

Initial Whooping Cough symptoms can feel like a simple cold: runny nose, sneezing, mild cough and low or no fever. Once fully established, the cough may or may not be accompanied by the characteristic “whooping sound,” which often happens when the ill person is gasping for air.

If you are sick, please respect the health of others and stay home. If a co-worker or student is ill, advise them to go home in the interest of public health and safety.

Please remember to use the Purell hand sanitizers that Mt. San Jacinto College installed last year.

Mt. San Jacinto College advises its students and employees to check with their doctors about vaccinations against Whooping Cough and the flu.

Whooping Cough vaccinations are available at Riverside County Family Care Centers. Please call (800)720-9553 for locations and information.

Or, call the San Bernardino Department of Public Health at (800)782-4264
