Admission and Requirements

Requirements for new MSJC students (New MSJC students are identified by having completed fewer than 12 transferable units):

  • Completion of the Honors Student Application.
  • Official transcripts demonstrating a 3.5 or better unweighted GPA or SAT 1890 (out of 2400), or SAT 1260 (out of 1600) or ACT 28 (out of 36)
  • Placement into ENGL 101 via Placement Test, AP scores or completion of ENGL 98 with a grade of C or higher.
  • A letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or principal familiar with your academic work, or for students returning to college after a period of time away from the classroom, a letter from an employer or community member who can attest to your work habits and motivation.
  • A copy of your education plan (which you will have completed with a counselor) indicating which courses you are hoping to take as Honors. If you have not completed an education plan, you may provide a list of which Honors classes you are planning to take at MSJC that will satisfy your graduation or transfer requirements.
  • A personal letter responding to the questions in Part III of the application form.

Requirements for continuing or returning MSJC students to join the Honors Program:

  • Completion of the Honors Student Application.
  • Unofficial transcripts demonstrating completion of at least 12 units of transfer-applicable coursework at Mt. San Jacinto College with a 3.3 GPA.
  • Placement into ENGL 101 via Placement Test, AP scores or completion of ENGL 98 with a grade of C or higher.
  • A personal letter responding to the questions in Part III of the application form.
  • A copy of your education plan (which you will have completed with a counselor) indicating which courses you are hoping to take as Honors.   If you have not completed an education plan, you may provide a list of which Honors classes you are planning to take at MSJC that will satisfy your graduation or transfer requirements.
  • Names of two MSJC faculty members familiar with your scholarship who will comment on behalf of your application to the program.
  • Once you’ve assured yourself that you have met these requirements, and you’ve received and reviewed your Honors Program Application, please submit it with all the required documentation to an Honors Enrichment Program Coordinator.

Requirements for Maintaining Membership in the Program:

  • Attend first available orientation following acceptance into the program.
  • Completion of English 101 by the end of their first semester in the program.
  • Completion of Math 96 by the end of their second semester in the program.
  • Maintain a 3.3 cumulative grade point average or a 3.3 semester grade point average. If you fall below this standard, you will be notified of your probationary status.
  • Enroll in one honors course each semester (You may take one semester off from the program via petition).
  • Maintain a 3.0 honors grade point average.
  • Following acceptance into the Honors Program, each new Honors Program student is required to schedule an academic counseling session with one of the Honors Program counselors:  Rosalva Amezcua (SJC), Miranda Angeles (MVC), Heather Pomerenke (MVC), Tatiana Somers (SJC), Erin Spurbeck (MVC – Honors and STEM), Lyndsey Tone (SJC), April Vrtis (MVC), and Renisha Warren (SJC – Honors and STEM).  Thereafter, academic counseling appointments must be scheduled once each semester with the honors counselor.
  • Conduct yourself in a manner reflecting credit on the Honors Enrichment Program.​
