Art Gallery Exhibit: Monumental

February 3, 2014

Monumental
Paintings and Drawings by Kevin Stewart-Magee
Presented at Mt. San Jacinto College

From February 13th through March 13th, the Mt. San Jacinto College Art Gallery will be hosting the exhibition “Monumental” a series of Paintings and Drawings by Kevin Stewart-Magee. These intimate glimpses of work clothes, exhausted laborers and abandoned factories present the manual laborer as tragic hero. Much like the lines in his face, the worker’s frayed shirt and worn boots suggest long efforts and lost dreams. The large scale of these images, combined with richly layered tones and hues, convey an atmosphere of isolation – a feeling of being alone with one’s work.

Kevin Stewart-Magee was born on an American Military base in Iran and grew up in the Rust Belt of Ohio. He studied at Kent State University and Columbus College of Art and Design before going on to receive his BFA from Ohio State University. After graduating, Kevin worked as a professional muralist completing over 100 projects in six Western states. These murals included commissions from Bristol Farms and Whole Foods Markets. He was a facilitator and lead artist for Judy Chicago’s “Envisioning the Future” project in Pomona, California. In addition to creating and showing his own works, Kevin has curated group exhibitions, managed a co-operative gallery in Pomona and taught painting and life drawing classes. Kevin received the Art Alliance Graduate Tribute scholarship and is now completing an MFA in Painting and Drawing at California State University at Fullerton.

A public reception for the artist will be held on Wednesday, February 12th, 5 -8 pm. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

An artist’s talk about his process and creative development will take place in the gallery on Tuesday, February 18th from 9 -10:30 am. The public is invited to attend.
