MSJC Art Gallery Presents a Community Outreach Art Exhibition

July 7, 2011

For the first exhibition of the fall semester, the Mt. San Jacinto College Art Gallery will be featuring "Black, White and Read All Over: An A.R.T.E.R.Y. Collaboration." The show has been made possible by the cooperative efforts of the MSJC Art Gallery, California Family Life Center (CFLC) and its affiliates in Hemet, Rubidoux, and Lake Elsinore.

The primary goal of A.R.T.E.R.Y. is to demonstrate to at-risk youth that fine arts and language arts are effective modes of safe and positive self-expression that will help them to navigate the challenges of life. By displaying their artwork at the MSJC Art Gallery, the participants are also exposed to college as an accessible and viable site to continue their education.

This year’s theme was charting a life story and worked with the motif of a map. Under the guidance of art educators Michele Worth and Sarah Holbach, the participants created a wide variety of artwork that was in direct response to writing that they did in journals. Their journal entries explored the theme by documenting experiences, identifying future plans, and recording personal thoughts and feelings. The writing component of A.R.T.E.R.Y. is aimed at helping the participants to gain communication skills, to use their imagination, and to build self-esteem. Because the journals and the art go hand in hand, the majority of the artwork on display has an autobiographical aspect.

More than 50 at-risk youth participated this year; all were between the ages of 15 and 25 years old. In addition to making art to be displayed in a college gallery setting, the participants also performed art-related community service by making storybooks, art packs, and rockers for Kin Care of Lake Elsinore.

"Black, White and Read All Over" will run from August 19 through September 15. The opening reception will be held on Friday, August 19 from 3 to 5pm. Gallery hours are Monday - Thursday, 10am - 4pm. The opening reception and exhibit are free and open to the public. For more information please contact the MSJC Art Gallery at 951-487-3585.
