The Mt. San Jacinto College Board of Trustees will hold its November 8th meeting at 2:30 p.m. on the Menifee Valley Campus. The board made the change during its regular meeting of Sept. 13, 2012 to coincide with the Nov. 8th Grand Opening of the Veterans Center on the Menifee Valley Campus.
The Veterans Center Grand Opening will start at 12:30 p.m. on November 8th.
During the Sept. 13th meeting, the board decided to take a 4.6 percent decrease in individual stipends. The board took the action as a gesture of unity with the college staff that took the same decrease in salaries because of State budget cuts.
Each board member’s stipend will be decreased retroactive to July 1, 2012, when MSJC administrators and classified staff took salary reductions in the form of 12 furlough days. The district’s calendar was revised to reflect the furlough days. The district will be closed for two weeks during winter and a week in the spring during 2012-13.
The furloughs were added to winter and spring breaks to minimize disruption to the students and to maximize the savings on utilities and other costs while the college is closed.
Patrick McCallum of the McCallum Group, which represents the college district before the State Legislature, updated the Trustees on the impacts of State budget cuts. He urged the Board to support Prop. 30, Governor Jerry Brown’s tax initiative. If the proposition fails, McCallum warned that there would be more devastating cuts that would affect community college students.
