Offices will close at noon on Fridays; change will not affect classes and events
Mt. San Jacinto College will implement new district-wide hours starting Aug. 8, 2011 in an effort to reduce operating expenses.
District offices will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays. This will not affect any classes, performing arts or athletic events.
MSJC has traditionally operated 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the exception of the Students Services Division. Student Services has been operating under the “4/9/4” schedule for several years.
The decision to implement the 4/9/4 schedule district-wide was based on cost and efficiency factors. The new district-wide 4/9/4 schedule will result in efficiencies: reduced utility expense, lower expense for hourly staff, more efficient scheduling of existing staff saving MSJC $110,000 during the 2011-12 fiscal year. Data shows that MSJC is busiest with students Monday through Thursday and on Friday mornings. Student traffic drops off considerably on Friday afternoons.
The savings come at a time when MSJC, along with all state community colleges, are experiencing unprecedented cuts. In the 2011-12 fiscal year, the state will cut $4.7 million in funding to MSJC. MSJC has taken many steps to reduce costs since California's economic crisis began in 2008. Steps to offset state funding cuts include using $1.3 million in reserves and implementing a pay freeze that is expected to reduce District expenses by approximately $800,000.
MSJC will continue to look for savings and efficiency strategies in these tough economic times while remaining committed to preserving education for its students.
