Students from MLK High and Beaumont High take first and second place
High school students from Riverside’s Martin Luther King High and from Beaumont High earned the top two spots in the annual Trig Star Event that was held at Mt. San Jacinto College on Saturday, March 17, 2012.
The first place winner was Cameron Schaefer from Martin Luther King High School. He received $200. The second place winner was Cindy Hoang-Tran from Beaumont High School, who received $100.
The two were among the 115 high school student students from 14 different schools throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties who took the Trig Star Exam and participated in outdoor activities that gave the students hands-on experience in careers ranging from engineering to surveying.
Trig-Star is a high school math competition highlighting careers in Engineering, Surveying and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Cash prizes were awarded for highest scores. Students who participated have the opportunity to apply for a $5,000 scholarship during their senior year.
“It is really inspiring to see these young people coming out to take a trigonometry exam on a Saturday, rain or shine,” said Lori Benson, MSJC’s Career & Technical Education project coordinator. “These are students of our future. They are bright, articulate, motivated, and excited about the future. What a fun, meaningful day!”
Participating schools were: San Bernardino County: Aquinas, Fontana, Redlands East Valley high schools, and Kolbe Academy Home School. From Riverside County: Beaumont, Hemet, Martin Luther King, Murrieta Mesa , Murrieta Valley, Patrio, Temescal Canyon, San Jacinto high schools, San Jacinto Valley Academy, and California Military Academy.
