Student volunteers from the Early Learning School Readiness AmeriCorps Program at Mt. San Jacinto College will partner with the Hemet library literacy program to host a “walk a mile for literacy” event this Saturday, Sept. 8.
Community members walk a mile in the shoes of someone who cannot read or write. Various checkpoints along the mile will be staffed with AmeriCorps volunteers who will help highlight the problem of living with illiteracy. This event is one of many activities the MSJC AmeriCorps members participate in every year.
A total of 20 students from the college will volunteer a total of 450 hours each to community service this year and receive an education award of $1,250 upon completion of their hours. The MSJC AmeriCorps program is currently recruiting students for next year’s program. For more information, contact Lorraine Slattery-Farrell at 951-487-3615.
