Assessment and Placement

Assessment (a component of the matriculation process) assists students with making sound decisions about their courses by evaluating their reading, writing and mathematics skills.

The Mt. San Jacinto Community College District uses the College Board computerized Accuplacer placement format for assessment testing.

students in a computer labThe purpose of ACCUPLACER tests is to provide you with useful information about your academic skills in Math, English, and Reading. The results of the assessment, in conjunction with your academic background, goals, and interests, are used by MSJC counselors to determine your course selection so that you have the best opportunity for success.

You can not "pass" or "fail" the placement tests, but it is very important that you do your very best on these tests so that you will have an accurate measure of your academic skills.

The Accuplacer assessment is administered online and usually requires a minimum of 2 hours for students to complete. The assessment staff will provide a 10-15 minute presentation at the beginning of each assessment session that will familiarize students with the Accuplacer format and answer any questions. Using the online version does not require special training or knowledge! A paper version of the Accuplacer is available on request, but we encourage the online version because of its adaptive testing technique. Adaptive testing means the questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. This technique selects just the right questions for your ability level.

In addition to assessment scores, evaluating a student's background (e.g. highest level of math and English courses completed, hours of study, hours of employment, etc.) are also used for course placement. Both measures help to provide students with the best opportunity for success in their courses.
