Attendance Policy:

Studying a foreign language is a difficult task that needs constant practice. Missing class means missing out on practice and explanations of grammar, vocabulary, usage, and many other important details. Also, any missed assignments are still required, and quizzes cannot always be made up. For these reasons, students are required to attend class regularly.  Those who are absent for more than five times or for three consecutive class meetings are subject to being dropped; however, students are responsible for dropping the class if necessary.  Do not expect to pass the class if you are absent too often!

Policy for Late Assignments:

  • In order to receive full credit, all homework must be turned in on the date due.  This is so any problems may be corrected before the exam.  Any homework turned in after the due date but by the day of the exam which will cover the topics in the homework will receive a maximum grade of 50%. This includes the final exam.
  • Missed exams and quizzes may be made up in the Learning Center up to one week late if the student has an acceptable excuse. Any listening section must be made up during the instructor’s office hours after arrangements with the instructor have been made.  If an exam has not been taken within one week, the grade for the exam or quiz becomes a zero.
  • The final exam must be taken at the assigned time unless prior special arrangements have been made with the instructor.

Composition of Final Grade:

Homework (workbook, Internet, and other out-of-class work)           15%

Labwork (in cahier: CDs or Internet)                                               10%

Compositions                                                                                15%

Quizzes and oral exams (always announced and explained ahead of time, 15-30 min.)                                                                                                                                                                                    10%

4 exams -- including final (all are cumulative, approx. 1 hour)             40%

Participation (responding to instructor, topical oral participation in class)                                                                                                                                                                                                    10%

                                                                                ________________

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            100%

Grades:

The grading scale is as follows:              90-100%       - A

80-89%         - B

70-79%         - C

60-69%         - D

0-59%          - F

Plagiarism Policy:

Plagiarism (copying or turning in someone else’s work as one’s own) is cheating and is not tolerated in the college community.  Any act of plagiarism will result in the student being dropped from the course or receiving a grade of “F” in the course, depending on the time of the plagiarism.  This includes homework, quizzes, and exams.

Class Composition:

Class will consist of lecture, class discussion, large group work, small group work, games, videos, singing, Internet work, and anything else we can think of that will enhance our language learning.  Students are expected to participate orally while in class but are required to allow other students to participate as well.  We will speak French unless English is necessary for comprehension (translation, grammar points, cultural issues, etc.).  Speaking English when French is expected will lower the participation grade.

Extra Credit:

Attendance at cultural events, watching French movies, completion of on-line work, and writing to pen pals are examples of work that will be given extra credit.  Go to the textbook website for some great links!  No student will be allowed more than 10% of his/her grade to be based on extra credit.

NO GRADES SHALL BE GIVEN FOR EFFORT OR IMPROVEMENT.
