Advisory Committee
MSJC’s Menifee Valley Campus GIS program mission and vision are driven by the surrounding community of students, faculty, work force professionals and advisory committee. The vision for GIS at Menifee Valley Campus is to open new horizons for students, both academically and in the work place. It is our goal to empower students with the knowledge and technological skills necessary to succeed in the 21st Century; ‘Space the Final Frontier – to go where no man has gone before’ with spatial knowledge and technologies.
The GIS Advisory Committee makes recommendations for maintaining and improving the program’s integrity. The Advisory Committee is comprised of local professionals, students and MSJC faculty who provide feedback on the program’s accomplishments and future needs to meet market demand. The GIS Advisory Committee has excellent representation, with members who have a vested interest in MSJC’s GIS program success. Because the field of GIS is so vital, diverse, and dynamic, those with a vested interest in the GIS program’s success are a vital component. Due to dynamic technological and software developments and the program’s growth, the GIS Advisory Committee meets twice annually.
MSJC has a responsibility to maintain the integrity of the GIS program and the GIS Advisory Committee serves as “watch dogs” for attaining the following goals:
- Prepare GIS students by teaching fundamental concepts, and thus articulate their transfer by preparing them for a university GIS program.
- Benefit the community by educating students with the skills needed to secure good jobs and providing GIS employers with well-educated employees.
- Hire qualified instructors with a master’s degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience in the field of GIS.
- Maintain integrity, diligence and reputation of the certificate program to avoid unethical practice of processing students through the program as a “certificate mill.”
- Continously upgrade software and hardware to provide experience with the latest technology.
- Maintain and upgrade curriculum as the field of GIS evolves.
