What Is GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are the cutting edge of today’s technology and a necessary skill in the 21st Century. GIS involves more than making maps on a computer, it is an information system that has the potential to create new knowledge about our world. As portrayed in films, news and television series, such as Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), GIS are useful as tracking and location systems. GIS are also used for complex international intelligence operations. Statistical GIS models are able to determine the probability of specific events and display them in three-dimensional, animated or virtual reality scenarios. Analytical applications of GIS can predict and simulate changes on this planet and others.

GIS are useful for integrating maps with large databases, that can then be displayed spatially to reveal patterns, trends and relationships in the data. If you are interested in identifying spatial patterns, such as climate change, crime waves, spread of diseases, predicting archaeology sites, determining site suitability for development, or locating real estate for clients, you will benefit from the GIS courses offered at Mt. San Jacinto College.
