Baseball Falls in Tight One to Top Ranked Palomar

The MSJC baseball team gave themselves a chance on Tuesday, but came up just short against Palomar 3-2 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference contest in San Jacinto.

The Comets entered the game as the top ranked team in Southern California and the #2 ranked team in the state, but MSJC was able to get out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Ben Moreno hit a two run single to center field scoring Nick Gonzales and Kash Mattson to put the Eagles on top.  Starting pitcher Zevon Benoit would keep the Comets scoreless until the top of the fourth when Palomar was able to plate an unearned run.  Palomar would add single runs in the 7th and 8th innings to squeeze out the one run victory.

Benoit (2-1) finished the game as the hard luck loser on the mound going 7 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, and 6 hits while striking out 2 and walking just one.  Mattson and Gonzales finished their day with two hits a piece to lead the offense.  MSJC was able to put two runners on in the bottom of the 9th, but could not push the tying run across the plate.

The loss drops MSJC to 10-18 overall on the season and 8-8 in PCAC play while the Comets improved to 23-5 and 14-2.  The Eagles will travel to San Marcos on Thursday to take on Palomar again at 2 pm and then the same two team will wrap up the season series on Saturday with a noon game on the San Jacinto Campus.
