Baseball Team Evens Record with Win Over Irvine
The MSJC baseball team picked up a non-conference win on Saturday afternoon as they defeated visiting Irvine Valley College 3-1.
Starting pitcher Zevon Benoit threw a complete game and was just two outs short of a shut out as he earned the win on the mound for the Eagles. Benoit threw 9 innings, allowing just 7 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 5. The run that the Lasers were able to push across in the top of the ninth was unearned.
The Eagles had taken a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Nick Gonzales and Ben Moreno each drove in a run. MSJC loaded the bases and scored on Gonzales' single to chase across the first run by Luis Arguellas. Jake Pulcheon then hit a ground ball to short which was misplayed scoring JT Brown to make 2-0. Moreno then capped off the inning with an RBI single to score John Silvas. The Eagles did not score again despite leaving 11 runners on base. Moreno finished the day going 4 for 4 at the plate with a double.
The win improved MSJC's season mark to 2-2 while Irvine Valley fell to 1-2. The Eagles will be in action twice this week on the road as they travel to Cerritos on Tuesday and then have a rematch with Irvine on Thursday.
