Baseball Team Opens PCAC Action with Victory
The MSJC baseball team opened up conference play for the 2016 season on Tuesday and came away with a 4-0 road win at Imperial Valley.
The Eagles scored 3 times in the top of the fourth inning to take control of the game. Nick Gonzales earned the first RBI of the day when he drew a bases loaded walk that scored Jake Pulcheon. On that same pitch the ball scooted away from the Arabs catcher and Ben Moreno came around all the way from second to add another run. In the Eagles next at bat J.T. Brown was able to cross the plate on another IVC wild pitch and MSJC took a 3-0 advantage. The Eagles would add one more run in the top of the 6th when Gonzales hit a sacrifice fly to score Moreno.
MSJC's starting pitcher Zevon Benoit held the Arabs in check on the afternoon as he threw his third complete game of the season and earned his third win. Benoit's shut out was the first for the Eagles this season. He went 9 innings allowing 7 hits while striking out 7 and walking none.
The win improved MSJC to 5-8 on the year overall and they are 1-0 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, while Imperial Valley fell to 4-10 and 0-1. The Eagles will return to action on Thursday when they host defending PCAC champion Palomar. First pitch on Thursday is set for 2 pm.
