Eagle Baseball Slugs Way to Sweep Over Mesa
The MSJC baseball team pounded out 21 hits on Saturday to complete their season sweep of San Diego Mesa as they picked up a key 13-10 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference win at home.
The Eagles came out of the gates quickly building a lead of 11-1 through five innings and then held on for the victory. Josh Minder started the scoring and his big day with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first scoring JT Brown. MSJC scored four times in the bottom of the 2nd when Mauryse McClellan drove in a run with an RBI single, Steven Ybarra followed with a 2 run single, and Minder struck again with an RBI double. Bryan Derzern would add an RBI in the third and Ben Moreno in the fourth to build the Eagles lead to 7-1 through four. MSJC had another big inning in the fifth when they scored four more times with RBIs from Derzern, Minder, Anthony Garcia, and Moreno. Nick Gonzales and Moreno added RBIs in the bottom of the 8th to round out the Eagles scoring.
Adam Fields picked up the pitching victory as he went 1 and 1/3 innings in relief. Johnny Hernandez got the Eagles off to a strong start gong 3 and 2/3 innings allowing just one earned run. Alec Garret, Ryan King, Alec Escalante, and Jeramy Smith all pitched in out of the bullpen.
Derzern and Minder shared game high honors with 4 hits a piece while Minder and Moreno each drove in three runs. Every starter in the MSJC line-up had at least one hit or one RBI.
The win pushed the Eagles record to 17-13 on the season and 13-5 in PCAC play while Mesa fell to 9-20 and 5-13. MSJC has two weeks left in their regular season with a 3 game series this week against San Diego City. The Eagles will play at home Tuesday and Saturday and travel to San Diego on Thursday. MSJC is currently tied in the loss column with first place Grossmont, the Griffons have the week off and are currently 16-5 in PCAC games. The Eagles and Griffons are set to meet the final week of the regular season for three games.
