Eagle Baseball Team Picks Up Win Over Mt. SAC
The MSJC baseball team evened their record at 1-1 on the young season Tuesday by defeating visiting Mt. San Antonio College 6-4 in a non-conference game.
The Eagles erased an early 1-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mo McClellan started the scoring with an RBI single and then Steven Ybarra cleared the bases with a two run triple. Bryan Derzern brought Ybarra home with a ground out to short. The Mounties rallied though in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4 when they scored three unearned runs capitalizing on two big Eagle errors.
MSJC pushed their way into the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when JT Brown and Ben Moreno each picked up RBI singles to give the Eagles a 6-4 advantage. The Eagle bullpen took over from there as they recovered from a rough opening day on Saturday to throw 3 shut out innings to preserve the win for starter Johnny Hernandez. Hernandez went six complete innings and then Brett Martin and Alec Escalante got MSJC through the 7th and 8th to set up the save for Eagle closer Jeramy Smith. Smith worked himself into a bases loaded jam in the ninth, but was able to get out of it without allowing a run. Moreno and McClellan both had two hits on the day.
The 1-1 Eagles will be back on their home field Thursday when they host Saddleback at 2 pm.
