Eagles Win Wild One to Take Series from Grossmont

The MSJC baseball team scored 14 runs in the final five innings Saturday as they rallied to beat Grossmont 16-15 in a PCAC game played at home.JohnPeukert23homerunforgmont3-18.jpg

The Eagles fell behind 8-2 after four innings, before chipping away at the Grossmont lead.  In the bottom of the fifth MSJC began their comeback when Joseph Wall hit a double down the right field line to drive in a pair of runs.  Wall had also driven in the Eagles first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second.  For the moment MSJC seemed to be back in the game at 8-4, but two more runs by the Griffons in the top of the sixth pushed the lead back to 10-4.  In the bottom of the sixth John Peukert, Trevor Castillo, and Brian Woolford each picked up an RBI when Peukert tripled and the two others picked up singles to cut the Grossmont lead to 10-7.  Again though Grossmont answered with two in the top of the 7th and the slugfest was in full swing.  Down 12-7 The Eagles answered with three this time in the bottom of the inning this time Abraham Rascon and Steven Silvas each had an RBI.

The Eagles finally pushed their way into the lead as they scored five times in the bottom of the 8th.  After another RBI from Rascon and two from Silvas, MSJC got a dramatic go ahead two run homerun from Peukert to take the lead 15-13.  The game again however was not over as the Griffons rallied to tie it at 15 a piece with two runs in the top of the 9th.  In the bottom of the 9th MSJC took advantage of a Grossmont error that allowed Shane Mittleman to reach base.  After a wild pitch advanced Mittleman to second Luke Reinert came up with a game winning single up the middle as the Eagle dugout celebrated the victory.

Wall finished the day with four RBIs while Silvas and Peukert each drove in three for MSJC.  Mittleman, Rascon, Silvas, and Castillo all had 3 hits in the victory as the Eagles pounded out 19 hits as a team.  Shane Sanders the sixth MSJC pitcher of the day earned the victory with one inning of work as he allowed no runs and struck out one.

MSJC is now 8-19 on the season and 7-5 in PCAC games while Grossmont fell to 14-13 overall and 6-6 in league play.  The Eagles have a three game series this week with first place Palomar who will come into the week with a 12-3 conference mark.  MSJC will travel to San Marcos on Tuesday and Saturday with the middle game of the series at home on Thursday.  Tuesday and Thursday's games will begin at 2 pm with Saturday's game set for 1 pm.
