MSJC Baseball Gets Home Win Against SD City

The MSJC baseball team won 12-2 on Saturday over visiting San Diego City to go 3-3 through the first round of Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles, who have now played everybody in the conference one time, jumped out to an early lead on the strength of 3 runs in the bottom of the second and 4 runs in the bottom of the third.  Nick Gonzales got things going for MSJC in the 2nd when he tripled down the right field line to drive in Mo McClellan and JT Brown.  Daniel Fernandez then followed with a single to score Gonzales.  In the third Ben Moreno picked up an RBI before Gonzales once again drove in a run.  David Alonzo also picked up two RBIs with a 2 out single.

MSJC would go on to add 3 runs in the 6th, and 2 in the 7th for the victory.  Zevon Benoit started the game on the mound for the Eagles and earned the win going 5 and 1/3 innings allowing just 1 run on 7 hits while striking out 4 and walking none.  Derek Smallen came out of the bullpen to throw 2 and 2/3 scoreless innings before the Knights were able to add 1 run in the top of the 9th.

For the Eagles Johnny Valdez, Ryan Dezern, Kash Mattson, Brown, and Jeremy Smith all added an RBI in the win.  MSJC improved to 5-13 overall on the season and 3-3 in PCAC play while SD City fell to 8-7 and 2-4.  The Eagles will play Imperial Valley in a three game series this week.  MSJC travels to Imperial on Tuesday and will host the Arabs on Thursday and Friday.
