MSJC Baseball Moves to 2-0 in Conference, Beats Palomar
The MSJC baseball team jumped out to an early lead and then hung on down the stretch to pick up a key early season conference victory as they beat visiting Palomar 7-5 on Thursday.
The Eagles came out of the gates quickly as they scored four times in the bottom of the first to take a lead they would never relinquish. The big blow in the bottom of the first came off the bat of designated hitter John Silvas who drove in two runs with a two out double. Palomar would cut the lead to 4-2 when they scored twice in the top of the 3rd, but MSJC answered with one in the bottom of the inning when Steven Ybarra singled home J.T. Brown. The Comets tried to make another comeback in the 8th when they scored two runs to make the score 5-4, but again the MSJC offense responded with two in the bottom half to create separation. Bryan Derzern and Jake Pulcheon each had RBI singles for the Eagles in the 8th.
Brett Martin earned his first win of the season on the mound as he went 7 strong innings. He allowed 8 hits and 2 runs while walking one and striking out 3. Jeramy Smith earned his second save of the year as he pitched the final two frames. Pulcheon ended the day going 3 for 5 at the plate while Ybarra, Derzern, and Josh Minder each had 2 hits.
The win improved the Eagles to 2-0 in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play, they are 6-8 overall. The defending conference champion Comets fell to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in PCAC action. MSJC travels to Chula Vista on Saturday to take on Southwestern at 12 pm.
