MSJC Baseball Wins Fifth Straight
The MSJC baseball team won for the fifth straight time on Saturday as they defeated San Diego City College 5-2 at home.
The Eagles scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead when Johnny Valdez had an RBI triple that scored Zach Fyfe. The Knights tied the score in the top of the second on an unearned run, but MSJC came right back to take the lead for good with a run in the bottom half. The Eagles second run was scored after Manny Mendoza started the inning with a triple and was driven in by Kyle Mead. MSJC made the lead more comfortable in the bottom of the fourth when they scored three runs to push the lead to 5-1. Markalexander Gamo drove in two runs with a double and Valdez knocked in his second run of the day with a base hit. City would add their second run of the day in the top of the sixth and that would be the end of the scoring for the day.
Joe Fernandez earned the pitching victory for the Eagles as he threw 7 and 1/3 innings allowing just one earned run while striking out three. Brian Hogencamp came on in relief to earn the save as he allowed just one hit in 1 and 2/3 innings.
MSJC improved to 11-10 overall on the season and 5-3 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. The Eagles who are currently in second place by half a game will take on first place Palomar three times this week. Palomar enters the week 7-2 in PCAC paly. Tuesday and Saturday's games will be in San Marcos and MSJC will host Palomar on Thursday at 2 pm.
