MSJC Pitches Then Hits to Sweep

The MSJC baseball team received outstanding pitching in game one and the bats came alive in game two as the Eagles swept Imperial Valley Thursday.

In game one Brian Lewis threw a complete game 2-hitter en route to the 2-1 victory. Lewis struck out 7 and walked just one. MSJC started quickly scoring in the first when Greg Anzures drove in Anthony Smith who had opened the inning with a double. Imperial answered in the top of the fourth when Sergio Panela hit a solo homer for the Arabs first hit of the game off Lewis. The Eagles however, answered back with a run in the bottom half of the fourth when John Skala drove in Jeff Bunch. Lewis took over from there shutting out the Arabs the rest of the way.

In game two it was the Eagles bats that came alive as they once again defeated the Arabs this time 12-5. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second MSJC answered in the bottom of the frame with 10 runs. Josh Barry started the inning with a solo blast over the right centerfield fence to tie the game, then the Eagles got hot, sending 14 hitters to the plate in the inning. Five hits, 3 walks, and 2 errors later the score was 10-1. The Arabs added 3 runs in the top of the third, but couldn't get any closer. Anthony Martinez went six innings for the victory on the mound, while Lawrence Gibson came in to pitch a scoreless seventh to end the game.

The wins improve the Eagles to 4-3 on the season. MSJC will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Pasadena for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
