Offense Explodes to Carry Baseball Team to Play-Offs

The MSJC baseball team wrapped up their regular season in grand fashion on Thursday and Friday as they scored 43 runs in two games to sweep Cerro Coso and qualify for the Southern California Regional Tournament.rickeraction.jpg

The Eagles pounded out 25 hits and scored 25 runs on Thursday in Ridgecrest as they beat the Coyotes 25-4.  MSJC scored 9 runs in the first and never looked back as Chase Phillips drove in a career high 7 runs in the game.  Phillips had a double, a triple, and a home run.  Jeff Ricker and Markalexander Gamo each drove in three runs a piece for MSJC and Joe Fernandez picked up the pitching victory going 7 innings.

Friday the Eagle bats came alive early again as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and cruised home with a 18-3 win.  Gamo once again drove in three runs for MSJC as did Manny Mendoza.  Ricker had a 5 for 6 day at the plate and scored 3 runs.  Hector Flores picked up his fourth win of the season on the hill going 6 and 2/3 innings allowing just one run while striking out 6.

The wins pushed the Eagles final regular season record to 24-12 and they wrapped up Foothill Conference play at 17-7.  The 17-7 mark was good enough for a second place finish in the conference.  MSJC will now advance to the Southern California Regionals where they will take on Mt. San Antonio College.  The Eagles will travel to Walnut on Friday and Saturday for a best of 3 series with the Mounties.  MSJC is seeded 12th in the Regional while Mt. SAC is seeded 5th. 

The play-offs begin on Friday with a 7 pm game in Walnut.  Game two of the series will be Saturday at 2 pm, a third game if necessary would be played Saturday as well, a half an hour after completion of game 2.


Jeff Ricker had 7 hits and drove in 4 runs on Thursday and Friday to help lead MSJC to a sweep of Cerro Coso and a spot in the Southern California Regional play-offs.  The Eagles open the play-offs on Friday at Mt. SAC at 2 pm.
