The MSJC football team took the opening kick off of Saturday's Homecoming game against San Diego Mesa, and marched right down the field on a 5 play 68 yard scoring drive to set the tone for the afternoon as they won the game 49-24.
The first touchdown was an 8 yard pass from Nigel Barksdale to Chris Robinson with 12:31 to play in the first quarter. Both teams defenses settled in for the remainder of the quarter before Mesa got on the board with a 22 yard field goal with 8:26 left to play in the half. The Eagles then exploded by scoring 21 straight points in the next 5:37. Barksdale hooked up with tight end Perris Scoggins on the ensuing drive for a 16 yard scoring pass, Barksdale would then add a 24 yard rushing touchdown to put MSJC up 21-3 with 2:56 to play in the half. On Mesa's next possession cornerback Dennis Fite jumped in front of a Jake Marrion pass and intercepted it and ran untouched 45 yards for an Eagle touchdown and a 28-3 halftime lead.
The second half got off to a quick start when Mesa took the opening drive down the field and scored a touchdown on a 4 play 61 yard drive. The Eagles bounced right back as Emanuel Hamilton took the following kick off and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown pushing the lead back to 25 at 35-10. Fite would add another interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter this time returning it 52 yards. The Eagles final score of the day came on a 30 yard touchdown pass from Tim Morovick to Steven Dawson for the 49-24 win.
Barksdale finished the day as the Eagles leading rusher carrying the ball 5 times for 54 yards. He also threw for 203 yards on 14 of 25 passing. Dalton Hunkle and Robinson both had 5 catches for MSJC while Dawson added 4. Defensively Anthony Gordon had a big day with 6 tackles including 2 sacks. Fite had 3 tackles to go along with his two interceptions.
The win improved the Eagles to 5-4 overall on the season and 3-1 in Mountain Conference action. Mesa dropped to 2-7 on the year and 1-3 in conference play. The Eagles wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Victorville to take on Victor Valley College at 1 pm.
