Eagle Football Team Stays Unbeaten With OT Win
The MSJC football team remained undefeated on the 2016 season as they out lasted visiting LA Pierce 19-16 in overtime Saturday at Carl Quandt Stadium.
The Eagles scored the first points of the game late in the first period when Josh Gonzalez connected on a 38 yard field goal. MSJC would extend the lead to 9-0 with just under six minutes remaining before halftime when Max Makarov capped off a 5 play 36 yard drive by scoring his first rushing touchdown of the season from 8 yards out. The Eagles two point conversion failed to keep the score at 9-0. Pierce scored their first touchdown on the day when Isaiah Staton picked off a Jake Newton pass and returned it 30 yards for the score, to cut the lead to 9-7. MSJC answered back on the ensuing possession when Corwin Cutler found Mike Reed for a 68 yard TD pass to push the lead back to nine at 16-7. The Brahmas got their first offensive points of the contest with just 5 seconds remaining before halftime when they connected on a 22 yard field goal to make the score 16-10 at the break.
The Eagle offense moved the ball in the second half, but turnovers kept them from putting any more points on the board. Meanwhile Pierce cut the lead to 16-13 with 8:47 to play in the third quarter on another field goal by Kevin Robledo. The Brahmas were then able to send the game into overtime when they kicked a field goal with no time left in regulation.
In overtime the Eagles started first with the ball and were unable to push it across the goal line for a touchdown, but did get a 20 yard field goal from Gonzalez to retake the lead 19-16. When Pierce had their chance with the ball they got it down to the MSJC 15 yard line, but on a third down play the Eagles' Dimitri Gallow came up with a game winning interception in the end zone.
The Eagles improved to 3-0 on the season despite turning the ball over 6 times on 5 fumbles and one interception, while Pierce fell to 1-3. Cutler finished the day throwing for 120 yards on 8 of 18 passing while Newton was 4 for 7 for 53 yards. On the ground Jomari Becnel topped the 100 yard mark for the third straight week as he rushed for 148 yards on 18 carries. Makarov added 40 yards on 9 rushes. Reed finished the afternoon catching 6 passes for 134 yards.
On defense Carl Bates had a sack, Gallow had an interception, and Davian Neitz broke up four passes. D.J. Reed-Samuel led the Eagles with 11 total tackles while Lanai Jackson-Barrow, and William LuLu had 8 each.
The Eagles will travel to Lancaster to take on Antelope Valley next Saturday in a game that is set to begin at 6 PM.
