The MSJC football team put four weeks of frustration behind them winning their final game of the season 52-33 at College of the Desert to reclaim the Palms to Pines Trophy.
The Eagles coming off four straight one possession losses took control of the game Saturday night early as Mykel Shelton scored on a 15 yard run with 10:26 to play in the opening quarter. Five minutes later quarterback Zach Chesser scored on a one yard run to push the lead to 14-0. The Eagles then expanded the lead to 21-0 when Chesser found Tyler Syvertson on a 6 yard TD pass.
MSJC continued to dominate the action in the second quarter as Eddy Williams scored on a 3 yard run to make it 29-0. The Eagles made the lead 36-0 just before half when tight end Syvertson took a hand off and threw the ball to Marlon Archer for a 50 yard touchdown pass.
Williams opened the third quarter with his second touchdown run of the night when he broke free for 41 yards and MSJC had their biggest lead of the game at 43-0. COD would make a valiant effort to get back in the game, but the Eagles held them off as they added a Bret Cronenwett field goal early in the fourth quarter and put the game away when Vanel Dossous scored on a 33 yard run.
Williams finished the night rushing for 108 yards on 29 carries. Chesser went 17 for 28 throwing for 192 yards while Dossous led the receiving corps with 6 catches for 113. Linebacker Donovan Brooks closed out his Eagle career with his best game recording a team high 7 tackles while Ronald Gaither, Darian Porter, and Marvon Brooks each had an interception. Johnny Williams, Wesley Scott, and Tommy Medina each picked up a sack in the victory.
The win gives the Eagles a final record of 4-6 on the year and a 3-4 mark in the American Mountain Conference. Desert finished their season with identical marks.
