The MSJC football team grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and hung on the rest of the evening as they won in Van Nuys 7-6 over Los Angeles Valley College Saturday night.
The Eagles scored in the first quarter on an 8 yard run by Eddy Williams and that would turn out to be all the points MSJC needed in the victory. The Monarchs made the score 7-6 later in the first quarter, but failed on a two point conversion to leave the Eagles up by one. The two teams traded defensive stands the rest of the half and MSJC led 7-6 at the half.
In the second half the Eagles defense came up with several big plays on fourth downs to keep the Monarchs from adding any points. The Eagle defense held LA Valley to 1 of 6 on fourth down plays in the game. MSJC drove the ball on a couple of occasions in the second half, but did have a short field goal blocked by LA Valley to keep the score close.
Williams finished the game rushing for 92 yards on 20 carries, while Jaron Johnson caught 10 passes fro 56 yards. Starting quarterback Casey Rogers finished his night going 9 for 23 fro 62 yards and was intercepted once, while Zach Chesser came off the bench to complete 6 of 11 passes for 37 yards. On defense George Obialo led the Eagles in tackles with 7 while Phillip Napoleon had 6 including a sack, Wesley Scott recovered a fumble for MSJC.
The Eagles are now 1-2 on the season and begin American Mountain Conference play on Saturday when they host San Bernardino Valley. The game on the 27th kicks off at 1 pm at Carl Quandt Stadium on the MSJC campus.
