Eagles Fall Short at AVC in Football Opener

The MSJC football team got off to a strong start on Saturday night in Lancaster, but couldn't hold on to the lead as they fell 27-20 in their season opener at Antelope Valley.eddywilliams.jpg

After a scoreless first quarter the Eagles seemed to take control of the game when they scored 13 unanswered points in a 7 1/2 minute stretch to start the second.  Brett Cronenwett capped off a 5 play 44 yard drive with a 25 yard field goal to get the scoring started on the first play of the second quarter.  On the Eagles next possession they pushed the lead to 10-0 when Jamion Lindsey caught a four yard touchdown pass from Casey Rogers.  MSJC then increased the lead scoring on their third straight possession when Cronenwett connected again, this time on a 23 yard field goal midway through the second quarter.  The Eagles would head to the locker room with a 13-0 lead.

The Marauders would get their offense started in the third quarter when they took advantage a botched punt attempt giving them good field position.  AVC scored four plays later when quarterback RJ Gordon ran it in to the end zone from three yards out.  AVC's extra point was no good and the score was 13-6.  On the ensuing MSJC possession the Eagles were moving the ball before a fumble at midfield gave the Marauders the ball back.  AVC took advantage and tied the game up on the very next play when Gordon connected with Derek Denton on a 50 yard touchdown strike.

The Eagles would reclaim the lead with 4:22 left in the third quarter when Rogers once again found Lindsey this time on a 20 yard TD pass completing a three play 49 yard drive.  The entertaining third quarter did not end however until AVC scored one more time on a 26 yard pass from Gordon to Denton to make it 20-19 MSJC.  AVC failed on a two point conversion and the Eagles headed to the fourth with a one point lead.

In the fourth quarter the only score came with 5:22 to play when AVC broke a 37 yard run by Ron Howard and made a two point conversion to lead 27-20.  The Eagles tried to mount one last drive, but came up short on a 4th and 12 at the AVC 18 yard line to end the game.

Rogers finished the night going 19 for 37 for 207 yards and two TDs while Eddy Williams ran the ball 28 times for 133 yards on the ground.  Lindsey finished with 5 catches for 45 yards while Jaron Johnson led the receiving corps with 7 receptions for 97 yards.  On defense Noah Widgins had 9 tackles while Darian Porter and George Obialo had 6 a piece.  Marvin Hifo had an interception for MSJC and Johnny Williams had a sack and a half.

The Eagles now 0-1 on the season will be back in action on Saturday September 13th when they host Glendale College.  Glendale won their season opener 41-0 over East Los Angeles College.  Kick off on Saturday at Carl Quandt Stadium is scheduled for 1 pm.
