The MSJC football team found some difficulty trying to establish it's offense on Saturday as they lost their season opener to visiting Antelope Valley College 34-0 at Carl Quandt Stadium.
The Marauders opened the scoring early in the game when they put together a 7 play 50 yard drive capped off by a Blake Shepard to Derek Denton 8 yard touchdown pass to grab a 6-0 lead with 10:14 to play in the first quarter. After a failed two point conversion both teams defenses' took over the rest of the period with neither team able to put any points on the scoreboard. AVC would push their lead to 13-0 early in the second when Edward Martin scored on a four yard run that finished an 11 play 70 yard scoring drive and James Augusta added the extra point. The teams would head to the locker room 13-0.
AVC blew the game open early in the third as they scored two touchdowns in less than a minute. First the Marauders extended the lead to 20-0 when Martin scored for the second time on the day with a 55 yard run. Just 56 seconds later AVC linebacker Trevonte Coleman recovered an MSJC fumble in the end zone to push the lead to 27-0. AVC would finish the day's scoring with just under 6 minutes to play in the third with a 17 yard TD pass form Shepard to Alex Byers.
The Eagles offense had a hard time getting going as they finished the afternoon with just 60 yards of total offense. Quarterback Jake Newton completed 19 of 34 passes for 75 yards and Don'yae Hopkins led the rushing attack with 41 yards on 14 carries. Hopkins also caught a game high 7 passes, but was limited to just two yards in those receptions. Elijah Brown caught 3 passes for 27 yards and Vanel Doussous had 4 receptions for 26 yards. C.J. Parker led the Eagle defense on the afternoon with 9 tackles including a sack and a pass break up. London Miller and Pierre Harris both had interceptions for the Eagles. Chris Whitfield added another sack for the MSJC defense.
The Eagles now 0-1 on the year will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Glendale. Glendale will enter the game 1-0 after they defeated East Los Angeles on Saturday. Kick off in Glendale is set for 7 pm.
