Football Team Drops Mountain Conference Opener
The MSJC football team fell behind 21-0 at halftime and could not recover as they lost their American Mountain Conference opener on the road to San Bernardino Valley College 41-21.
The Wolverines took a 7-0 lead with 5:27 to play in the first quarter when Deion Walker scored on a four yard run. Daniel Epperson connected with Mason Rutherford on the first play of the second quarter on a 31 yard pass play to push SBVC's lead to 14-0. The Wolverines extended their lead to 21-0 at halftime and then pushed it to 28-0 with five minutes remaining in the third period.
The Eagles first score of the night came with 3 seconds left in the third quarter when defensive back C.J. Parker picked off an Epperson pass and ran it back 61 yards for a touchdown. SBVC responded with a field goal, a defensive touchdown of their own, and another field goal to make the score 41-7 with 6:07 remaining in the game. The Eagles did add two TDs in the final 3:28 of the game when Jake Newton threw a pair of scoring passes. Marlon Archer had a 10 yard TD reception and Elijah Brown added a 20 yard scoring catch to make the final score 41-21.
Newton finished the day going 21 for 42 passing with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Brown had a game high 7 catches for 115 yards while Vanel Dossous added 5 receptions and Archer finished with 4. On defense Parker had 9 tackles to go along with his interception. Andrew Berry recorded 7 tackles and George Obialo had one and a half sacks.
The loss drops MSJC to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in Mountain Conference play while San Bernardino improved to 4-0 and 1-0. The Eagles return to action next Saturday when they travel to Compton for a 1 pm game.
