Football Team Falls in Close One at Southwestern

The MSJC football team fell to first place Southwestern Saturday 24-12 at Chula Vista. The game was a close one throughout, but the Eagles were unable to come away with their first win of the season.

The Eagles defense was impressive all night holding a Jaguars team that had scored 48 and 52 points the last two weeks to 24. Southwestern had the advantage of good field position in the first half and were able to take a 14-3 lead into the halftime break.

MSJC answered in the third quarter when Zoltan Riazzo hit his second field goal of the night to cut the Jaguar lead to 14-6. Five minutes later running back Butch Tuvale scored on a 3 yard run for MSJC as the Eagles edged to within two at 14-12. That would however be all the points the Eagles could come up with and 10 fourth quarter points by Southwestern led to the final score.

Tuvale had a big night offensively for MSJC gaining 100 yards on 20 carries, while quarterback Carmen Boyer threw for 110 yards completing 18 of 35 passes. On the defensive side of the ball Kyle Shaw picked up an interception while Eric Devries, Danny Anderson, and Isaiah Holland all had 8 total tackles.

The loss drops MSJC to 0-6 on the season 0-3 in Mountain Conference play. The Eagles return home this Saturday when they host San Bernardino Valley in the 2008 Homecoming game. Kick off is set for 1 pm.
