Football Team Shuts Out Compton in 2016 Opener
The MSJC football team scored just 4:13 into the game on Saturday and never looked back as they blanked visiting Compton 43-0 in the 2016 season opener at Carl Quandt Stadium.
Jomari Becnel broke free for a 61 yard run to score the first touchdown of the season for the Eagles and after Josh Gonzalez added the extra point MSJC was up 7-0 with 10:47 still to play in the first quarter. Becnel would end up scoring two more TDs on the day as he ran one across the goal line from 2 yards out with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter and then got free for his second big run as he went 66 yards for a score with 10:53 to play in the second. Elijah Brown added a touchdown when he caught a 3 yard pass from Jake Newton with 7:18 to play before half and after another Gonzalez kick MSJC led 29-0, which would be the score at the break.
In the second half MSJC added a touchdown in each the third and fourth quarter to finish off the scoring. In the third Corwin Cutler found Adolfo Gonzalez for a 14 yard TD pass and in the fourth Mike Reed caught Newton's second touchdown pass of the day from 5 yards out.
Becnel finished his huge afternoon with 175 yards rushing on just 14 carries to go along with his three touchdowns. The impressive Eagle running game also saw Noah Kimbrough reach the 100 yard mark as he carried it 13 times for 128 yards. The two other MSJC backs who saw the ball in the game, Amos Ridges and Cory Smith combined to run it 9 times for 53 yards. Newton and Cutler split time at quarterback during the game with Newton finishing his day 8 of 15 passing with 2 TDs and one interception while Cutler threw it just 8 times going 4 for 8 with one TD. Reed caught a team high 6 passes for 41 yards.
The Eagle defense held Compton to just 226 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers to preserve the shut out. Lanai Jackson-Barrow had a team high 9 tackles on the day while Trent Johnson and Jose Cera both had 7. Linebacker William LuLu had a big impact on the game as he had a sack and a forced fumble which led to one of the Eagles touchdowns. Dimitri Gallow also helped save the shut out as he picked off a Compton pass in the end zone. Darwin Anderson also had an interception for the MSJC defense.
The season opening win improves the Eagles to 1-0 on the season while Compton falls to 0-2. MSJC will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Glendale. Saturday's game at Glendale is set to kick off at 6 pm.
