Late Field Goal Leads Eagles Past Glendale
The MSJC football team struggled with the kicking game all night Saturday, until a big field goal with 7:22 remaining in the game gave them a 21-19 win at Glendale.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 6-0 lead just three minutes into the game when Corwin Cutler hit Mike Reed on a 23 yard touchdown pass, but Josh Gonzalez missed the extra point. MSJC would push the lead to 12-0 just 7 minutes later when Jomari Becnel scored on a 12 yard run, this time Gonzalez's extra point was blocked. The score would remain 12-0 until a frantic finish to the first half. Glendale finally got on the scoreboard with a 23 yard run from David Arriga with 1:05 to play before half to cut the lead to 12-7. The Eagles responded with a quick 7 play 71 yard TD drive that was capped off by a Jake Newton to James Duff 32 yard pass with just 2 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter. Gonzalez's kick was once again blocked and MSJC went into halftime with an 18-7 lead.
Glendale got their offense going in the third quarter as they scored on a 6 yard pass from Arriga to Anthony McGinnis with 12:36 to play in the third. This time though it was Glendale who failed to convert the extra point and the Eagles clung to an 18-13 lead after 3 quarters. In the fourth Glendale took their first lead of the night when Devin Mangrum scored on a two yard run, but yet again the extra point try failed and MSJC trailed just 19-18. In the middle of the fourth period the Eagles put together a 10 play 37 yard drive and on fourth down attempted a 30 yard field goal to take the lead. This time Gonzalez knocked it through the up rights and MSJC reclaimed the lead at 21-19 with 7:22 to play in the game. The MSJC defense took over from there to preserve the victory.
Becnel finished his night with his second straight game with over 100 yards on the ground as he had 24 carries for 106 yards. The quarterback combination of Cutler and Newton finished the night throwing a pair of TD passes. Cutler went 9 for 23 on the evening for 95 yards while Newton was 6 for 13 for 93 yards. Reed led the receiving corps with 7 catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.
On defense William LuLu had and interception for the Eagles. Carl Bates, Tommy McCraw, and Quinton Blair each had a solo sack while Chris Estrella and Jose Cera teamed up to get MSJC's fourth sack on the night.
The win improved the Eagles record on the season to 2-0 while Glendale fell to 0-3. MSJC will return home to Carl Quandt Stadium next Saturday September 24th when they host LA Pierce at 1 pm.
