MSJC Falls in Three Overtimes

The MSJC football team scored with 1:23 left in regulation and converted a two point conversion to force the game into overtime Saturday, but came up just short in the third extra period 43-41.fugavssw.JPG

The Eagles made a valiant comeback after trailing 28-10 at the half.  Jameson Schultz (Yucaipa HS) made a 35 yard field goal with 11:28 to go in the third to cut the lead to 28-13 and that is where the game stood until the start of quarter number 4.  In the final quarter the Eagles scored 15 unanswered points on two 1 yard TD runs by quarterback Nigel Barksdale (San Jacinto HS) and a two point conversion also ran in by Barksdale.  The Eagle defense was tough in the second half shutting out the Jaguars for the final 30 minutes.

In the first overtime period the Eagles took the ball first and after solid runs by running back Franex Dort (Lakeworth, FL), Barksdale again scored from one yard out and after the Schultz extra point the Eagles led 35-28.  Southwestern was able to answer with at TD of their own to send the game into a second overtime.  Neither team was able to score in the second overtime as the Eagles forced a fumble by the Jaguars and then the Eagles missed a field goal.  In the third overtime the Eagles once again took the lead when Dort scored his second touchdown of the night on an 8 yard run.  The Eagles two point conversion was stopped short and the lead stood at 41-35.  The Eagles then seemed to have won the game on Southwestern's next possession but an apparent interception was denied due to a defensive holding penalty.  Southwestern regrouped and scored the tying touchdown and then were able to win the game on their two point try.

Barksdale finished the game throwing for 240 yards on 21 of 36 passing
while Dort led the Eagles on the ground with 31 carries for 184 yards.  Chris Robinson (Hemet HS) had 7 catches for 81 yards while Jeremy Rykard (O'Fallon, IL) had 4 grabs for 99 yards.  On the defensive side of the ball Larry Dowdell (Fultondale, GA) had 17 total tackles while Cejay Ceniza (Las Vegas, NV), Manny Rathel (Lakeworth, FL), and Fontayne Fuga (Chapparal HS) each had an interception.

The loss drops the Eagles to 2-3 on the season while Southwestern improved to 2-2.  MSJC gets the week off this week before returning to action on October 16th when they travel to San Bernardino Valley for a 6 pm game.  The game with the Wolverines will be the American Mountain Conference opener for both teams.
