The MSJC football team had a hard time putting points on the board Saturday as they fell to visiting Glendale College 30-8 in their 2014 home opener.
The Eagles held a brief lead 8-3 early in the second quarter when Ronald Gaither returned a kick off 90 yards for MSJC's only touchdown of the afternoon. The Vaqueros would score two touchdowns in the a 3 minute span midway through quarter number two to head into the halftime break with a 16-8 lead.
MSJC's defense kept the Eagles in it most of the way, until a 20 yard pass from Andre Nunez to Will Fennessy pushed Glendale's lead to 23-8 with 4:38 to play in the third quarter. Glendale would add one more touchdown late in the 3rd on a 1 yard run by Nunez to stretch the lead to 30-8. Neither team could find any points in the final 15 minutes.
For MSJC, running back Eddy Williams finished the day with 89 yards rushing on 17 carries, while wide receiver Jaron Johnson tied for game high honors with 5 receptions. Quarterback Casey Rogers finished a tough day going 8 for 28 for 103 yards and was intercepted one time. On defense Darian Porter, Chris Whitfield, and Phillip Napoleon each had 8 tackles to tie for team high honors. Johnny Williams had 7 tackles including a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Gaither who returned the kick off for a touchdown also had an interception for the Eagles.
MSJC is now 0-2 on the season while Glendale improved to 2-0. The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday night when they travel to Van Nuys to take on Los Angeles Valley College in a 7 pm game. MSJC returns home on Saturday September 27th when they host San Bernardino Valley.
