MSJC Wins Football Finale in Dramatic Fashion
The MSJC football team scored the go ahead touchdown with 29 seconds remaining in the game to beat San Bernardino Valley 36-30 in their final game of 2017.
The Eagles opened the game taking advantage of a SBVC fumble that set up a quick five play 12 yard drive that ended with a 1 yard TD run by Jomari Becnel to give MSJC the early 7-0 lead. The Wolverines would come back to score a pair of touchdowns on an 80 yard interception return and a 14 play 80 yard drive to take the lead into the halftime break 14-7. The third quarter was back and forth as the offenses and defenses both scored points. MSJC tied up the game early in the third when Sheriron Jones scored on a five yard run with 12:54 left in the period. SBVC would reclaim the lead on a safety, but on their ensuing possession the Wolverines fumbled and it was scooped up by the Eagles Quinton Blair who took it 40 yards for a touchdown and the Eagles were once again back a head at 21-16. The Wolverines then once again scored back to back TDs to end the third period with a 30-21 advantage.
In the fourth quarter Becnel punched in another 1 yard run with 7:12 left in the game to cut the lead to 30-28 setting up the dramatic finish. MSJC went 81 yards in 12 plays capped off by a Jones to Kefa Cort scoring pass from 14 yards out to give the Eagles the lead, and after a two point conversion it was 36-30 with just 29 seconds to play. The Wolverines had one last gasp though and ran a hook and ladder play that looked to have a chance of scoring, but the play ended at the MSJC 12 yard line as time expired.
The win concluded the Eagles season at 5-5, they finished 2-3 in American Mountain League play. SBVC also finished their season at 5-5.
