Southwestern Defeats Eagles 20-10

The MSJC football team had their winning streak snapped at two games Saturday as they lost on the road to Southwestern 20-10.

Southwestern, who improved to 3-1 on the season, scored first early in the game on a 38 yard run by Cass White with 10:46 to play in the first quarter. MSJC would get their only points of the first half on the following possession when Jaime Lucio booted a 36 yard field goal.  The Jaguars outscored the Eagles 10-0 in the second quarter to make the score 17-3 at the break.

The Eagles defense did their job in the second half limiting Southwestern to just one score which came on a 37 yard field goal with 9:20 to go in the third quarter.  MSJC finally got in the end zone with 11:56 to play in the fourth quarter on a 10 yard run by Josh Reed to pull within 20-10.  The Eagles could not get any closer however and that is how the game ended.

MSJC quarterback Nigel Barksdale threw for 148 yards on 13 of 24 passing, but was intercepted 4 times.  Chris Robinson and Steven Dawson both caught three passes for the Eagles.  Reed led the MSJC ground game with 51 yards on 14 carries.  Dennis Fite led the Eagles defense with 7 tackles while safety Mandela Mosley had an interception.  Matias Carrin and Brian Malone each picked up a sack for MSJC.

The loss drops the Eagles to 2-3 on the season.  MSJC will take this week off before opening Mountain Conference play on October 15th when they host defending conference champion San Bernardino Valley.  The game on the 15th at Carl Quandt Stadium will kick off at 1 pm.
