Turnovers Cost Eagles at West LA

The MSJC football team held an 11 point lead with 7 minutes to go in the third quarter Saturday but were out scored 25-3 down the stretch to fall at West LA 38-27.

The first half was evenly matched as both teams scored a field goal in the first quarter and a touchdown in the second for a 10-10 halftime score.  The Eagles first half scoring came on a 40 yard field goal by Jameson Schultz (Yucaipa HS) and a 12 yard touchdown pass from Nigel Barksdale (San Jacinto HS) to Tyrone Richardson (West Valley HS).westlaforweb.JPG

West LA came out in the second half and took the lead early on a field goal to make the score 13-10.  MSJC answered with back to back touchdowns on passes from Barksdale to Jeremy Rykard (O'Fallon IL) and Dorian Scotto (West Valley HS) to reclaim the lead at 24-13.  From there West LA was able to take control of the game and the Eagles could only manage another 40 yard field goal by Schultz the rest of the way. 

The Eagles turned the ball over 6 times on the afternoon with three interceptions and three fumbles.  The Eagle offense moved the ball all day racking up 373 total yards while West LA had 390 yards.  Barksdale ended the day 16 for 29 passing for 182 yards, he had 3 td passes and 3 balls intercepted.  Kenny Bell (AB Miller HS) had 5 catches for 82 yards, while Rykard ended the day with 4 receptions for 45 yards.  Franex Dort led the ground game with 16 carries for 150 yards.  Bronson Alfafara (Ewa Beach, HI) led MSJC's defense with 11 tackles.  Larry Dowdell (Fultondale, GA) had 2 sacks and Manny Rathel (Lake Worth, FL) had an interception. 

The loss drops the Eagles to 1-2 on the season while West LA improved to 2-1.  MSJC is back in action next Saturday September 25th when they travel to LA Southwest for a 6 pm game.
