Eagles Fast Start Carries Them Past Ventura

The MSJC men's basketball team out scored Ventura 33-10 in the final 14 and a half minutes of the first half on Saturday night to cruise to a 78-56 win in the second round of the CCCAA Southern California Regionalsamventura.jpg

The Eagles got the game off to a fast start when Carlos McCormick connected with Dwayne Benjamin on a lob dunk off the opening tip to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.  The Pirates would hang around for the first 5 plus minutes tying the score at 12-12, before a 15-2 run by MSJC built the lead to 27-14 when McCormick made his only three point shot of the night.  The Eagles would continue to build the first half lead as PCAC North player of the year Benjamin scored all 20 of his points in the first half to give MSJC a commanding 45-22 lead.

In the second half it was more of the same as MSJC never let the Pirates make any type of comeback.  The Eagles pushed the lead all the way to 30 with 7:34 to play in the game when Sam Williams made a thunderous dunk to put the game completely out of reach.  Benjamin's 20 points was a team high he also grabbed 5 rebounds and had 4 assists.  Williams finished the night with 14 points and Dajuan Smith added 10 in the victory.  The Eagles dominated the boards as they out rebounded the Pirates 50-29 on the night.

The win improved MSJC's overall record to 24-4 and advanced them to the So Cal Regional Semi-Finals on Wednesday.  The Eagles will host Citrus College Wednesday night at 7 pm.  The Eagles and the Owls met earlier this season when MSJC defeated Citrus 84-83 on November 16th in the semi-finals of the San Diego City Tournament.  Tickets for Wednesday night's game will be available at the door.
