Eagles Open RCC Tourney With Win Over Copper Mountain

The MSJC men's basketball team won their fourth straight game on Wednesday night as they defeated Copper Mountain 91-56 on the opening day of the Riverside Holiday Invitational.DavidThompsonforCopperMtn-18.jpg

The Eagles opened a lead of 40-32 by halftime and then out scored the Fighting Cacti 51-24 to pull away for the victory in the second.  The Eagles had a tough night shooting it from the field as they went just 25 of 65 from the floor and 5 of 24 from three point range, but got to the free throw line 39 times and connected on 36 of them.  MSJC also had an advantage on the glass as they out rebounded Copper Mountain 52-41.  The defensive effort by the Eagles was also strong as they​ held the Fighting Cacti to 25% shooting from the field.

David Thompson led all scorers in the game as he tallied 27 points in the victory.  Deshawn Millington continued his strong offensive showing of late as he recorded 24 points, Luka Filipovic just missed a double double as he had 10 points and 9 rebounds for MSJC.  C.J. Hyder led the Eagles on the glass with 10 rebounds to go along with 9 points and Israel Farrington also had 9 points for MSJC.

The win improved the Eagles to 9-1 on the season while Copper Mountain fell to 7-3.  MSJC is right back in action today when they return to Riverside to take on Saddleback at 4 pm.
