The MSJC men's basketball team outscored visiting Citrus College by 21 points in the second half on Friday night to pick up an 87-69 victory in the 2nd round of the CCCAA Southern California Regional Play-offs.
The Eagles fell behind early in the game and trailed by as much as 9 with just over six minutes to play in the first half, before narrowing the gap to three at the half at 40-37. MSJC used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to go from down 50-48 to leading 58-50 on the strength of three baskets by Blake O'Donnell and two by Austin Klug. Samuel Williams, the state's leading scorer, joined in and scored 8 of the Eagles next 10 points as MSJC started to pull away. MSJC's defense also stepped up in the second half holding the Owls to just 29 points and 9 field goals.
Williams finished with a game high 29 points while O'Donnell had a double double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, he also dished out 5 assists. Klug came off the bench to score 14 and grab 5 rebounds. MSJC out rebounded the Owls 50-36 on the night.
The win improved the Eagles to 23-7 on the season as they advanced to the Regional Semi-Finals. MSJC will now travel to #2 seed Saddleback on Wednesday night. Wednesday's game in Mission Viejo will tip off at 7 pm. This will be the third meeting of the season between the Eagles and the Gauchos, the Gauchos won the first two.
