The MSJC men's basketball team won three straight games Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to claim the championship in the Hemet Valley Kiwanis Hoops and Crops Tournament.
The Eagles started the tourney on Thursday with an 83-75 win over College of the Canyons. MSJC shook off a cold start to outscored the Cougars by 12 in the second half on their way to the victory. Samuel Williams led the Eagles offense with 29 points and he also grabbed 5 rebounds. PeeWee Gardner added 15 points and Tre Hunter had 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Friday MSJC used a strong second half again this time to pull away from Riverside City College as the Eagles beat the Tigers 72-56. Williams once again was MSJC's top scorer with 20, Hunter added 15 and Austin Klug came off the bench to score 10.
The Eagles started Saturday's championship game with Yuba by building a lead of 15 midway through the first half, but had to come back in the final 10 minutes of the game to defeat the 49ers 94-89. Williams, the tournament MVP, had 29 points and 6 rebounds in the title tilt while Gardner scored 21. Hunter, who was named to the All Tournament team, added 12 points and Blake O'Donnell had a double double with 10 points and 10 assists.
The three victories pushed the Eagles record to 8-3 on the season. MSJC will be back in action this week when they play in the Riverside Holiday Tournament.
